YPPD, EU and GIZ-ECOWAS Build Capacity of Youth on Electoral Conflict Prevention in Sierra Leone

YPPD, EU and GIZ-ECOWAS Build Capacity of Youth on Electoral Conflict Prevention in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone, a nation that has experienced the devastating consequences of electoral conflict in the past, is taking proactive measures to ensure peaceful elections in the future. The Youth Peace and Development Organization (YPPD), in collaboration with the German International Cooperation (GIZ) through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the European Union (EU), has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to build the capacity of youth in electoral conflict prevention.

Empowering Youth as Agents of Change

With elections on the horizon, Sierra Leone is acutely aware of the need to create an environment that fosters democracy and ensures the smooth functioning of the electoral process. The scars of the civil war that plagued the nation are still fresh, and the country is determined to avoid a repeat of the violence and bloodshed that marred its history.

Recognizing the crucial role of youth in shaping the future of Sierra Leone, YPPD has taken the lead in empowering young people to become active agents of change in their communities. The partnership between YPPD, GIZ-ECOWAS, and the EU has brought together a wealth of knowledge and resources to design a comprehensive training program aimed at equipping youth with the necessary skills to identify and address potential electoral conflicts.

Comprehensive Training Program

The program includes workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions conducted by seasoned experts in conflict resolution, electoral processes, and community engagement. Participants undergo intensive training in:

  • Conflict analysis
  • Early warning systems
  • Mediation techniques
  • Effective communication
  • Inclusivity and gender equality
  • Human rights during the electoral process

By providing young people with these tools, YPPD aims to create a network of informed and engaged individuals who can play a vital role in preventing conflicts and promoting peaceful elections.

Students Sensitization Forum

In a Students Sensitization Forum, the Team Lead and Executive Coordinator of YPPD, Musa Ansumana Soko, in his opening remarks, pointed out that the engagements with young people across the country seek to provide the needed skills and knowledge around electoral conflict prevention and the Proportional Representation (PR) system.

Peter Senesie, Programme Manager, underscored the importance of the training, noting that the engagement fosters peacebuilding and mitigates electoral conflicts before the national election. He emphasized that the sessions also encompass balanced election observation, equipping participants with tools to comprehend the proportional representation system, engage in conflict analysis and prevention, and effectively monitor and report any electoral irregularities. Senesie acknowledged the significance of collaboration and community-driven endeavors in achieving long-term peace and stability. He stated that the initiative serves as a means to support and empower youth leaders and civil society organization members in their dedicated efforts to cultivate more robust and harmonious communities.

Building a Network Across Sierra Leone

The initiative has already made significant strides in reaching out to youth across Sierra Leone. In partnership with local community organizations, YPPD has organized training sessions in various regions, ensuring that young people from diverse backgrounds have access to this invaluable knowledge. The response from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to their country's progress.

Voices from the Field: Fatmata Sesay

One of the program's success stories is Fatmata Sesay, a 23-year-old student from Freetown. Fatmata, who had witnessed the devastating consequences of electoral violence during her childhood, was determined to be part of the solution. After completing the training, she became an advocate for peaceful elections, actively engaging with her peers and organizing community dialogues to promote tolerance and understanding.

"The YPPD training has transformed my perspective on conflict prevention," said Fatmata. "I now understand the importance of youth involvement in building peaceful societies. By sharing my knowledge and experiences, I hope to inspire others to take a stand against electoral violence."

Program Highlights

Mohamed Kunta, Learning and Development Officer for YPPD, created a common ground for each participant to be acquainted with each other in a conducive atmosphere. He used the forum to explain the workshop's purpose and additional practical information pertinent to the training. He advised first-time voters to see the electioneering process as a civil right to participate in making the right decision, noting that discussing a single youth negatively or positively impacts the child and the country.

Sahr Kendema, Campaign for Good Governance Program Head and lead Facilitator, delivered a PowerPoint presentation explaining peacebuilding and its importance. He cited:

  • The role of youth leaders in peacebuilding
  • Case studies of successful peacebuilding initiatives
  • Understanding the different types of conflict that can arise during elections
  • Critical conflict principles
  • Alternative dispute resolution
  • Peacebuilding strategies

Interactive Learning Approach

At the end of every topic, participants were divided into groups to do presentations. They dramatized lessons learned, which enabled them to understand the root causes of conflict, violence, and other related disputes that occur before, during, and after elections.

Fostering a Culture of Peace

The impact of YPPD's efforts extends beyond individual participants. By creating a network of empowered and informed youth, the program is fostering a culture of peace and tolerance that permeates communities throughout Sierra Leone. The ripple effect of their actions can be seen in:

  • Increased civic engagement
  • Constructive dialogue
  • A growing sense of unity among young people

A Model to Scale

Sierra Leone's commitment to preventing electoral conflicts serves as an inspiration to other nations grappling with similar challenges. The collaborative approach between YPPD, GIZ-ECOWAS, and the EU demonstrates the power of partnerships in effecting meaningful change. As the country approaches the upcoming elections, the newfound capacity of youth to prevent conflicts will undoubtedly contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous future for Sierra Leone.

In a country plagued by divisive politics and social barriers, the efforts of YPPD and its partners remind us that the youth hold the key to a brighter tomorrow.
